2022 City of Avon Park Charter Amendment

The Avon Park City Council passed Ordinance No. 08-2022- amending Article 2, Sections 2.02 and 4.05 of the City of Avon Park City Charter, to make two changes to the City Charter:

1. Extend mayor and city council member terms from three to four years.

-- This amendment, if passed, would allow council members to serve for four years before they would be required to run for office again.

2. Impose term limits for mayor and council members to two (2) consecutive terms.

--This amendment, if passed, would limit the number of terms of council members to two (2) consecutive terms.

The question of amendment of the Charter of the City of Avon Park, Florida, as provided in the Ordinance, shall be submitted to a vote of the electors of the City of Avon Park at the general election to be held on November 8, 2022.

Consistent with Section 101.161, Florida Statutes, the ballot titles and summaries that shall appear on the referendum election ballot for this proposed Charter amendment shall read as follows:

 

CITY CHARTER AMENDMENTS

Amendment to extend councilperson and mayor-councilperson terms

from three to four years

The existing City Charter shall be amended as follows:

Charter sections 2.02 and 4.05 are amended to extend councilperson and mayor-councilperson terms from three to four years, and scheduling transition of term extensions.

Amendment to impose term limits of two consecutive terms on councilmembers and mayor-councilmember; grammatical modifications.

The existing City Charter shall be amended as follows:

Charter section 2.02 is amended to impose a consecutive term limit of two consecutive terms on councilmembers and mayor-councilmember. Charter sections 2.02 and 4.05 have been amended to correct grammatical issues.
