Vision
To deliver exceptional public services to the residents, businesses, and visitors of Avon Park through manicured greenspaces, sound infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and customer-focused engagement practices.
The Public Works Department has three Divisions consisting of Streets, Solid Waste, and Utilities.
- Streets Division: Develops, operates, and maintains our parks, streets, and recreation systems which enriches the quality of life for our residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The Parks and Recreation section within the Streets Division is responsible for promoting health and wellness, driving economic opportunities, and strengthening communities. The Division also manages the storm water system in accordance with the City’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4) Permit with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP).
- Solid Waste Division: Responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste and garbage to help maintain public health, safety, and general sanitary conditions throughout the city. The Solid Waste Division operates as an Enterprise Fund capable of sustaining day-to-day and future operations through maintenance and capital expenditures. Clean landscaping debris is taken to the City Landfill, and all other waste is taken to the County Landfill.
- Utilities Division: Manages the daily operations of a multi-discipline team providing operations and maintenance for wastewater treatment, lift stations, water treatment, and water distribution systems to ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local Laws and Ordinances. The Utilities Division also operates as an Enterprise Fund capable of sustaining day-to-day and future operations through maintenance and capital expenditures. Capital Expenditures within the Division are both short-term and long-term to provide quality infrastructure for today’s needs and future demands.
