The Utilities Department manages the daily operations and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant, water mains, and lift stations. This Department is responsible for water treatment as well as collection and distribution while ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local laws and Ordinances. This Department provides high-quality drinking water and works to safeguard public health by promoting water conservation. The Department also maintains the City’s water and wastewater infrastructure for proper operation and maintenance of the treatment systems and equipment.
The Utilities Department is responsible for the installation and maintenance of municipal water distribution and wastewater collection systems, as well as engagement in the construction and repair of water and wastewater mains. The Department is the point of contact for new developments, including building relationships with local vendor contacts, Highlands County, and neighboring communities.
This Department is a public community water system under the City Department of Public Works. The Department provides water for about 11,051 residents living in the area of South Avon Park, Florida. Established in 1886, the Avon Park Water System currently obtains its supply from a groundwater source—seven wells that draw water from the Floridian Aquifer.
