About the American Red Cross in South Florida

As a community-based humanitarian organization, the American Red Cross South Florida Region prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

We respond approximately every 20 hours to emergencies and disasters across the region—home fires, floods, and weather related emergencies—and more, providing shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost to those in need. Click here to read more about the Red Cross Mission.

The South Florida Region of the American Red Cross is comprised of four chapters:  Palm Beach and Treasure Coast, Broward County, Greater Miami and The Keys, and Florida Gulf Coast to Heartland. Together, these chapters serve a population of nearly 8 million people across 13 counties.

Message from the American Red Cross, 6/2/2023:

We are now 8+ months post Hurricane Ian and our recovery work continues. The Red Cross long-term recovery team is actively working to support the community and we expect to announce our grant recipients in the coming weeks. However, today marks the start of hurricane season. The Red Cross continues to work hard to ensure residents are prepared and informed about what to expect and where to go in an emergency.  We have been urging the community to update their evacuation plans and emergency preparedness kit because we know that preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane.

Our disaster services team has been working with the County Emergency Management to clarify our roles and responsibilities before and after a tropical storm or hurricane.  It is important for everyone to understand the role of the American Red Cross with respect to sheltering operations prior to a storm making landfall, and in a post-storm recovery period as well.  In the coming week, I will share the finalized Letter of Intent from our South Florida Regional Disaster Officer regarding the Red Cross sheltering commitments.

The Red Cross has a hurricane app that can be downloaded free to your mobile device. The app sends location-based weather alerts, includes tips on how to assemble an emergency kit in the event of a power outage or evacuation, and a real-time map to help you find the location of Red Cross shelters should you need to leave your home. The app can be found in smartphone app stores by searching for American Red Cross, texting "EMERGENCY" to 90999, or by going to redcross.org/apps.
